Low Carbon Destinations comes out of a 2023 Churchill Fellowship Decarbonising the whole visitor journey for rural destinations. This involved visiting over a dozen destinations in Austria, Switzerland, Greece and Belgium which were identified for their potential to understand better the individual components of the whole journey model, and where possible how the components work together. This involved speaking with many people in those destination who freely gave their time, for which I am very grateful.

In addition, a Foundation for Intregrated Transport Fellowship from 2020 supported work in the UK on governance of transport in national parks.

It is also informed by work within the Lake District National Park Authority, Friends of the Lake District, and transport consultancy work in recent years in Snowdonia / Yr Wyddfa, Brecon Beacons / Bannau Bryeiniog, Loch Lomond & the Trossachs and Cairngorms national parks, Northumberland Coast AONB and Kielder Forest Park with Martin Higgitt Associates and Ansons Consulting.

Low Carbon Destinations CIC is being established as a vehicle to help lead on the priority actions as well as to contrubute to and infleunce debates in these areas.

It is led by Alistair Kirkbride.
